A small specialist college is making a big impact. Ascent Autism Specialist College, part of the Remarkable Group, has been named Most Inspirational Sixth Form & College at the 2025 Educate Awards, sponsored by Liverpool John Moores University. Chosen from a highly competitive field of schools, colleges, and multi-academy trusts across Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Merseyside, the award recognises the college’s exceptional work in helping autistic young people thrive.
Under the leadership of Julliet Doherty, Head of Adult Services, Ascent has transformed from a small cohort of 12 students in 2019 to a vibrant learning community of 41, where every student is encouraged to discover their strengths and achieve their goals.
Practical learning that builds confidence
Students gain practical, hands-on experience through projects such as the Horse Box Café, where they manage everything from serving customers to running the till. From now on, the café will be open to the public on Wednesdays at 11 The Parks in Haydock, offering learners a chance to engage with the wider community while developing confidence, teamwork, and real-world skills.
Expanding opportunities for learners
The college is also upgrading its Vocational Learning Hub on Vista Road, Newton-le-Willows, providing even more opportunities for students to develop authentic work skills. Additional initiatives include supported internships and employer autism awareness training, preparing students for life beyond college.
