Ascent Autism Specialist College, based in Newton-le-Willows, has been shortlisted for two prestigious awards at the Liverpool City Region (LCR) Culture & Creativity Awards 2024.
The shortlist, which was announced earlier today, revealed that the college had been named as a finalist for the Preparing for Work Award and the Environmental Award.
Ascent College places a huge emphasis on employability and helps students break down barriers to the world of work. The college’s employability model challenges and empowers students, supporting them to pursue their aspirations.
Through a wealth of pathways to employment, students at Ascent College can gain real-world experiences and new skills that enable them to become enquiring, critical thinking and future-orientated individuals.
The college has spearheaded several environmental projects and campaigns to become environmentally friendly and sustainable.
An offsite classroom, based at Lyme and Wood Learning Hub, was developed and created by staff and students to focus on the benefits of outdoor learning. The Pre-Loved Project, a social enterprise established by the college, produces and sells sustainable and zero-waste products.
Earlier this year, the college was awarded an £8,000 grant from Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority to enable them to further develop their provision at the Pre-Loved Project, which included the introduction of several workshops that help people develop the skills and knowledge to become eco-friendlier and more sustainable.
Head of adult services at Ascent College, Julliet Doherty, said: “We are incredibly honoured to be named as finalists in two categories at the Liverpool City Region Culture & Creativity Awards.
“Our mission is to support our students to access equal opportunities and help them to break down barriers. Deep-rooted social challenges affect the lives of thousands of autistic individuals, something we are passionate about tackling at Ascent College.
“We are extremely proud to be recognised for our work and look forward to the award ceremony in 2024.”
The LCR Culture & Creativity Awards recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution that culture and creativity make to the city region.
The awards, now in their fifth year, were established in 2019 as part of the Metro Mayor’s commitment to culture.
